Wanted: Used Eyeglasses
We are collecting used eyeglasses to donate to Alaffia Sustanable Skin Care. If you would like to contribute any prescription eyeglasses to this project, please bring them to Community Pharmacy through the end of June, and we will send them along!
From Alaffia's press release: Alaffia Sustainable Skin Care is collecting used eyeglasses to distribute to needy individuals in Togo, West Africa.
The World Health Organization estimates the use of corrective lenses could improve the eyesight of one-fourth of the world's population. There are too few optometrists in Togo, where an eye exam costs as much as one month's wages and a pair of glasses can cost up to four months' income.
The Importance of Your Donation: -- Over 1 billion people in developing countries need eyeglasses but cannot afford them. -- Over 4 million pairs of eyeglasses are thrown away each year in North America. -- 25% of the global population needs eyeglasses. -- 50% of children in institutions for the blind in Africa would be able to read normal or large print if they had eyeglasses.

Spring Wild Food Walk
Did you know that many of the plants we call weeds are edible and are actually far more nutritious than many of our domesticated vegetables? Some of our most common weeds are surprisingly delicious as well! Join Rose Barlow and learn how to go grocery shopping in your own backyard! This workshop will include: -- A wild food walk where we will learn to identify a variety of in-season common edible plants. -- A lecture and display on edible wild foods. -- A sampling of wild food dishes, desserts and beverages. -- Hand-outs and recipes.
Rose Barlow has been an herbalist for over 20 years, practicing in the Wise Woman tradition. This is a tradition of healing through optimal nourishment using simple, safe herbs found in our own backyards, prepared by our own hands. She specializes in nutritive herbs, developing recipes for wild foods and integrating wild food into modern diet and lifestyle. She conducts workshops, walks and presentations, maintains an educational website, and is currently director of the Coulee Region Herbal Institute in Southwestern Wisconsin.
